Community Green Team

Our Community Green Team provides practical, on-the-ground help for vulnerable residents across the Dorset Council area who are unable to manage essential tasks around their home or garden themselves. Our Community Workers and volunteers can help with certain jobs that make a home safer, more manageable or enable someone to remain independent.

How we may be able to help

Depending on the person’s circumstances and the support available, our Community Green Team may be able to help with:

  • maintenance gardening, including mowing and hedgetrimming
  • moving beds or furniture where this is needed to accommodate hospital or essential care equipment
  • delivering and installing key safes
  • small practical jobs around the home (seasonally)

Every situation is different, so if you’re unsure whether a particular task is something we can help with, please get in touch with our team before making a referral.

Who is the service for?

The Community Green Team is there to support vulnerable residents who are unable to carry out essential practical tasks themselves and don’t have friends, family or other appropriate support available to help.

If someone is able to arrange or pay for the work themselves, we are not able to provide the work through the Community Green Team. However, we may be able to signpost them to appropriate paid services or other sources of support.

What we can't provide

The Community Green Team isn’t a general gardening, maintenance, removal or trades service. There are some types of work we’re unable to undertake, including:

  • Larger scale garden work, eg landscaping, fencing
  • Clearing and removing waste of any kind
  • Trade work, eg plumbing, electrics or carpentry
  • Interior decoration, eg painting
  • Installation of safety equipment, eg grab rails
  • General furniture moving, removals or house moves
  • Tree cutting or high hedges
  • Gardens that are unsafe due to rubbish or dog mess

If the work falls outside what our team can provide, we’ll help signpost to other appropriate services where possible.

Making a referral

If you’re a professional supporting someone in the Dorset Council area who may benefit from this service, you can make a referral to our team through our online referral form.

The Community Green Team is in high demand and currently has a long waiting list. Each referral is considered according to the person’s circumstances, the work required and the support we have available.

If we’re unable to provide the help needed, or another service would be more appropriate, we’ll aim to signpost to alternative support where possible.

If you’re a friend or family member of someone who may benefit from our Community Green Team, you can contact us.

You don’t need to be certain that this service is the right service before contacting us. If you’d prefer to talk through the person’s circumstances and the support they may need, we’re happy to have an informal conversation first.
